Media: MGM loses rights to Tomb Raider - movie franchise to be re-launched
Earlier, Alicia Vikander, the lead actress in the reboot of the Tomb Raider movie franchise, talked about the suspension of the sequel. It seems that the sequel will not appear at all. The media reports that MGM no longer owns the rights to the series.
Because of an agreement between Amazon and MGM, production of the movie has stopped. MGM was supposed to give the second movie about Lara Croft the green light until May 2022, but lost the moment. The film rights had slipped back to GK Films, which had bought them from Square Enix back in 2011.
Now, according to publications, many studios and streaming services are fighting among themselves to appropriate such a big series. One insider compared producer hype around Tomb Raider to mass hysteria.
Meanwhile, all previous plans for a sequel have been canceled: Alicia Vikander is no longer associated with the project, and Misha Green is no longer in the director's chair. According to insiders, Lara Croft will be played by another actress, and the film franchise is waiting for another relaunch at all.
Recall, Tom Raider: Lara Croft earned nearly $275 million worldwide and received average reviews from critics and audiences alike.
