Avada Kedavra - even the top NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards struggle to handle Hogwarts Legacy in 4K UHD

February 10, 2023 is a happy day for fans of the Harry Potter universe. Action/RPG Hogwarts Legacy is now available to PC and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S | X consoles. But if you have a 4K UHD monitor, you'll have to buy GeForce RTX 4090 to get the most out of it.

Here's What We Know

TechPowerUp tested the game with various NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards. Let's note right away that Hogwarts Legacy requires between 9GB and 12GB of video memory depending on resolution, and activating best trace technology increases VRAM consumption by another 2.5-5GB.

Many modern graphics cards have no problem playing the game if you select Full HD resolution in the settings. Even the GeForce RTX 3060 produces over 52 FPS. In the case of the GeForce RTX 3050, framerate averages 36 FPS.

When the resolution is upgraded to Quad HD, the frame rates of the two aforementioned graphics cards drop to 34 FPS and 24 FPS respectively. Problems also appear with Radeon RX 5700 XT and Radeon RX 6600 XT. Starting with GeForce RTX 3070, all graphics cards deliver more than 50 FPS.

And in 4K UHD, only GeForce RTX 4090 and Radeon RX 7900 XT with 24GB of memory can deliver 60 FPS. But the GeForce RTX 4080 is not far behind with an average of 58.3 FPS. Starting with the GeForce RTX 3070, the graphics cards are not capable of delivering 30 FPS.

A good filter is ray tracing technology, once activated, even the GeForce RTX 3090 cannot deliver the coveted 60 FPS in Full HD. When upscaling to 4K UHD resolution, the best figure is 36.5 FPS on the same top-of-the-line GeForce RTX 4090.
