The Last of Us series pushed the game to the top of the sales charts
HBO's The Last of Us series has been an incredible success, so it's no surprise that people who were not familiar with the game before would want to play it, which they obviously did, as the game is very popular again. According to the latest NPD Group report, The Last of Us: Part I jumped from 36th place in December 2022 to 11th place in January this year, when the series premiered.
In fact, we have already seen this before: with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt after the release of The Witcher series from Netflix, or with Cyberpunk 2077 after the release of the highly successful Cyberpunk series: Edgrunners. But in the case of TLoU, it seems that Sony expected the series to increase in popularity thanks to the game, and not vice versa.
