Destiny 2 player fined $500,000 for racist insults, harassment, and threats to developer

Jesse James Comer, a Destiny 2 player who insulted and terrorised a Bungie community manager on a racist basis, will be forced to pay $500,000 in compensation.

Here's What We Know

According to the investigation, Comer found the address and phone number of this employee and sent threats and unpaid pizza to his door. In one of the last messages, he even said that Bungie should create a game where only characters of colour would have to be killed. The victim and his wife expressed concern for their safety, so Bungie took "extensive measures", including hiring round-the-clock security for their home.

The company also hired private detectives to identify Comer, as he was hiding behind a pseudonym. In addition, the studio paid all necessary legal fees associated with the lawsuit against Komer.

As expected, the court recently ruled in favour of Bungie, finding Comer liable for violating the victim's privacy and interfering with his business operations. As a result, Comer was ordered to pay compensation in the amount of $489,435. However, the exact amount that the victim will receive remains unknown.

Kathryn Tewson, an assistant counsel who assisted Bungie in the case, expressed her understanding on Twitter. She called Comer a "racist and offensive person" who did not even try to defend himself in court. Tewson noted that the ruling would set a precedent that would make it easier for employees to protect themselves from online harassment by their employers.
