Google has announced the Pixel 7a smartphone. The new model is the cheapest of the current generation, complementing the flagships Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro introduced late last year.

Here's What We Know

The Pixel 7a measures 152 x 72.9 x 9mm and weighs 193.5g. The frame is made of aluminium, with plastic on the back and Gorilla Glass 3 on the front. The water protection complies with the IP67 standard.

The smartphone has an organic LED display with HDR and 90Hz refresh rate. The Full HD+ panel has a 6.1" diagonal and a built-in optical fingerprint scanner. The pixel density is 429 ppi.

At the heart of the Pixel 7a is the Tensor G2 mobile chip, which is used in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The processor is made using 5nm technology and is clocked at 2.85GHz. The battery capacity was 4,385mAh and the charging power was 20W (wired) and 18W (wireless).

The main camera features a 64MP and 13MP wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle modules, respectively. The former has optical stabilisation, Dual Pixel autofocus and can shoot video in 4K UHD at 60 FPS.

Google called the Pixel 7a "the best smartphone for calls". There's a Clear Calling feature to improve the quality of conversations. Call Screen lets you know who's calling and Direct My Call lets you get through to the right department of a particular company faster. There is also a Wait Time feature that indicates the waiting time when calling an organisation.

The novelty has Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, GPS, USB-C 3.2, stereo speakers and a 13MP camera for selfies with 4K UHD support. The smartphone goes on sale with Android 13 operating system pre-installed.

The Google Pixel 7a will cost $499 / £449 / €509. The new product is available on the market in black, white, orange and blue body colours. The smartphone is only available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The company is giving away Google Pixel Buds A earphones when ordering before May 12.
