Google has announced that it is reconsidering its decision to deactivate all short links on goo.gl on 25 August 2025. The company had previously intended to permanently end their support, but will now only deactivate those that have been inactive since the end of 2024. The rest will continue to operate unchanged.

Why did Google refuse to completely shut down?

Judging by the official blog, most of the https://goo.gl/* links were already inactive - over 99% of the links have not received clicks since the end of 2024. However, in light of complaints from users who found them in videos, articles and documents, Google has kept the links active.

What happens to inactive links

Those goo.gl-links that have not been used for a long time and have already shown a warning will still be disabled on 25 August 2025. They will start giving a 404 error or stop working altogether.

If you use goo.gl links somewhere - go through them and check if they show a warning. If they do, replace them with alternative services like Bitly or TinyURL. This will help avoid broken links in blogs, social media, documents and presentations. SEO-such links can also suffer: other people's publications leading through goo.gl will no longer lead to the right resources.
