Apple announces changes to iOS 17.4 for EU users
In January of this year, Apple began releasing beta versions of its upcoming iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4 software update to developers. These changes were made in order to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), and mainly affect users in the European Union. The updates include several key changes that will be applied to apps and the App Store in the EU.
New Changes from Apple
- The ability of developers to create alternative app stores;
- Allowing alternative payment options in apps;
- Notarisation for apps distributed through alternative stores;
- Functional restrictions for applications distributed through alternative stores;
- Extended third-party access to NFC for payments;
- The ability to select a default browser.
According to Apple, these changes are aimed at ensuring the security and privacy of users, as well as supporting competition and innovation in the market. One of the main reactions to these changes is the announcement by Epic Games of its intention to place its Epic Games Store on iPhone and iPad in accordance with Apple's new policies. This also means that users will be able to play popular games such as Fortnite without restrictions related to the legal disputes between Apple and Epic Games.
The public release of the iOS 17.4 update is expected to take place in March, with only the beta version available now. The company must comply with EU DMA rules by 6 March 2024.
