James Gunn denies rumours: Superman's return is not a story about a young hero

Director and screenwriter James Gunn recently told fans about his plans for the new Superman film, which is titled Superman: Legacy. Although there have been rumours that it will be a story about a young Superman, Gunn confirmed that the film will focus on the character's early years, but that doesn't mean it's a story about a young Superman.

Here's What We Know

The DC Studios co-creator responded to a question from a fan in a thread on the Threads forum who wanted to clarify what time period will unfold in "Superman: Legacy." Gunn clarified the situation, writing, "I never intended to make a film about a young Superman, just a film about Superman!"

Filming on the new film began in late June. As we already know, David Corenswet will replace Henry Cavill in the lead role. Gunn has previously explained that one of the main reasons for the actor change was due to the time period in which the story unfolds. In the initial stages, the plot will focus on Superman's early years, so the role will not be played by Henry Cavill.

Gunn claims that "Superman: Legacy" will not be a film about the hero's origins, and Peter Safran also noted that the new film will focus on "Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage and life on Earth."

"Superman: Legacy" will be the first film in Gunn and Safran's DC Universe (DCU) media franchise, which they announced back in January.

When We Can Expect It

Chapter One of the DCU will kick off with "Superman: Legacy," scheduled for 11 July 2025, which also includes "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," "Batman: The Brave and the Bold," "Swamp Thing" and "The Authority," along with five TV series: "Creature Commandos," "Waller," "Lanterns," "Booster Gold" and "Paradise Lost."
