Better than Marvel: James Gunn promises that his version of the DCU won't have the same chronology issues as the MCU
James Gunn is clearly making it clear that he will initially have complete control and will not face one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's problems in his new work on the DC Universe. There's no denying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become such a vast world that fans now need a guide to help make sense of the timeline. This is reflected in a new book from Marvel Studios called "Marvel Studios: 'Marvel Cinematic Universe: 'Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline'". But according to James Gunn, such a guide won't be needed in his new DC universe.
Here's What We Know
Gunn has amassed a wealth of experience working with Marvel Studios on the "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise, and now he's bringing all that experience to DC Studios to relaunch the DC Universe. Responding to a fan comment in Threads, Gunn emphasised that he will avoid one of the biggest problems with the MCU. He was asked if the DC Universe will have the same "timeline keeper" that reportedly oversees the MCU timeline. To which Gunn replied:
Me and the rest of the team (Chantal and Glanen and Jess etc). If that's a position at Marvel I do not know who that person is (I've never discussed anything with them), but I guess that’s why I think [Guardians of the Galaxy] Vol 3 is now and everyone keeps saying 2030 or something (I ALREADY thought I was pushing the limits of [Star-Lord's] Grandpa still being alive!).
So, essentially, Gunn is hoping to avoid having to constantly monitor the timeline of his DC universe and will be careful to keep the linear chronology from being as complex as Marvel's.
However, there is no doubt that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always had a more defined direction than the DCEU. Nevertheless, the franchise's chronology has recently been revised several times to make it more consistent. Since the end of Endgame, many Marvel projects have actually taken place in "real time" and fans have had trouble pinpointing the exact location of events.
For James Gunn, it seems like the DC Universe will largely be his creative vision, much like Kevin Feige was the architect of the MCU. And while that can be both good and bad, Gunn has a knack for taking a blank canvas and populating it with characters.
When it comes to the new DC franchise, it seems Gunn is given almost complete freedom to choose his characters, and while he brings new versions of iconic characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman to life, he also delves into more obscure characters like Booster Gold and The Authority who haven't previously had a chance to prove themselves on the big screen.
