David Zaslav, the head of Warner Bros. Discovery, reveals plans to revitalise franchises: Harry Potter Returns and new Lord of the Rings films

David Zaslav believes the DC, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises are under-exploited and reveals Warner Bros.' multi-year plans for its major franchises.

Here's What We Know

At the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference (according to The Wrap), Zaslav claims that the company is under-exploiting franchises like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the DC Universe, especially after the success of the Barbie film earlier this year.

"One of the other real strengths of Warner Bros. is we talk about the great IP that Warner Bros. owns. But, for us, the challenge is that our content, our great IP — Harry Potter, DC, Lord of the Rings — that content has been underused. We think there's a lot of shareholder value in attaching a 10-year DC — a real plan around DC, bringing Harry Potter back to HBO for 10 consecutive years, doing multiple movies of Lord of the Rings. "

Will there be any new Lord of the Rings films?

In addition to the upcoming animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Warner Bros. has hinted at plans to work on new films with New Line Cinema and Embracer Group, which currently owns the rights to the franchise.

What is in the plans for the DC Universe?

As DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran announced earlier this year, they intend to aggressively develop DC Studios' Gods and Monsters project, which will include Superman: Legacy, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing and The Authority. It also includes the HBO Max TV shows "Waller," "Booster Gold," "Lanterns," "Paradise Lost" and the animated series "Creature Commandos."
