'Wonka' director Paul King considers making a sequel: 'I would definitely like to do more'
In an exclusive interview, Paul King is joined by producers David Heyman, who just finished work on the 2023 hit Barbie, and Alexandra Derbyshire to talk about the making of Wonka and discuss the possibility of a second instalment.
Here's What We Know
Paul King tells Total Film about wanting to work on a sequel to the upcoming film "Wonka."
"I would definitely like to do more. And I’d like to spend more time in this world.".
The picture serves as a prologue to the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," starring the late Gene Wilder, which was an adaptation of the classic 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by British author Roald Dahl.
"Wonka" from King tells the story of young Willy Wonka, played by Timothée Chalamet, on his journey to becoming a world-famous chocolatier.
During his lifetime, Dahl wrote over 300 short stories and began work on many more. Officially, he only published two books about Willy Wonka: "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and its sequel, "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator." However, he apparently had many other stories about Wonka's adventures that remained unpublished.
King shared that he is open to exploring this untold world of Willy Wonka.
"Dahl was definitely interested in taking Willy Wonka on. There’s drafts that didn’t really go anywhere, and there’s a short story. He didn’t really write sequels, but this was the one book where he clearly felt there was more in the tank there. There’s an awful lot more Wonka story that we have that we would like to tell. It’s not like Dune: Part One where you go, 'This is what’s happening in Part Two.' Hopefully it works exquisitely as a stand-alone movie. But I would definitely like to do more. And I’d like to spend more time in this world, and meet some more Oompa Loompas".
When We Can Expect It
"Wonka" will be released in cinemas on December 15, 2023.
