Plastic Queen "Barbie" is set to overtake the box office record set by Marvel's "The Avengers" and will be one of the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time
The box office of Greta Gerwig's Barbie is growing rapidly and steadily, despite the fact that it is in its eighth week at the box office. And "Barbie" is projected to comfortably surpass 2012's "The Avengers" by the end of this weekend.
Here's What We Know
Since "Barbie" premiered in theatres on July 21, the Greta Gerwig-directed film starring Margot Robbie as the lead doll has been relentlessly breaking box office records, quickly surpassing the $1 billion mark worldwide. This made it the most successful film directed by a woman in cinematic history.
According to Variety, "Barbie" box office receipts continue to climb. By the end of this weekend, they will surpass $623 million at the domestic box office. That means the film has overtaken 2012's "The Avengers" to become one of the top 11 most profitable films of all time in North America.
What's more, there seems to be a chance that Plastic Queen of the box office, could enter the top 10.
In order to take that honourable anniversary spot, "Barbie" needs to surpass 2015's "Jurassic World" in terms of box office receipts. That sequel to "Jurassic Park" grossed more than $653.4 million at the domestic box office. That means "Barbie" needs to gross another $30 million to reach its goal.
Still, the possibility of Barbie reaching that mark in the U.S. is pretty unlikely. The film grossed less than $6 million last weekend and less than $4 million this weekend. With the slowdown due to the film's online release since September 12, it's likely that the film will need a special re-release on the big screens to continue its growth. Fortunately, Barbie will have the opportunity to finish the film's box office run with flying colours, as it will begin showing in IMAX format from September 22, which could be the final push to achieve that goal.
