'Oppenheimer' box office triumph: film about the father of the atomic bomb bypasses 'Bohemian Rhapsody' to become the highest-grossing biopic in history
A film about Oppenheimer crosses the $900 million mark and leaves behind "Bohemian Rhapsody," which previously held the status of highest-grossing biographical film.
Here's What We Know
The 2018 film "Bohemian Rhapsody" starring Rami Malek, who managed to win an Oscar for his interpretation of Freddie Mercury, was an absolute success in its time, reaching a total of $910.8 million. Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," which was released in July, has exceeded expectations and, according to Deadline, will reach an impressive $912 million this weekend, putting "Bohemian Rhapsody" behind the highest-grossing biopic in history.
For the sake of pure comparison, it's worth noting that "Bohemian Rhapsody" had a much smaller budget of around $55 million, which could mean it's a much bigger success, as "Oppenheimer" has a budget in excess of $100 million. Nevertheless, the Mercury biography was rated PG-13, translating to a wider audience than Nolan's film, which is rated R.
The interesting fact is that Rami Malek can boast his involvement in two of these iconic projects at once. Certainly on a different scale. The main star of "Oppenheimer" is Cillian Murphy, nevertheless, Malek's role in the film about the father of the atomic bomb, is quite significant.
