Director Todd Phillips marks one year until the premiere of the "Joker" sequel with a fresh image of Joaquin Phoenix in his iconic portrayal of the DC Universe villain

Today is exactly one year to the release of the second instalment of one of the comic book world's most unconventional stories, The Joker, which has grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Director Todd Phillips felt it was symbolic to share an exclusive image of Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker.

Here's What We Know

A sequel to the film, titled "Joker: Folie a Deux," revealing the complex relationship between Arthur Fleck/Joker and Harley Quinn, who will be embodied by Lady Gaga, was filmed earlier this year.

Now, it is known that "Joker: Folie a Deux" will start to be broadcast in cinemas in exactly one year and Todd Phillips decided to publish a photo of the main character on his Instagram.

The photo of Phoenix standing in the rain says: "Oct. 4. Thanks for all the messages. Four years ago we had quite a ride. Lots of great memories. More to come."

Here's What The Movie Is About

Joker: Folie a Deux is stated to be a musical that tells the tangled relationship between Arthur Fleck aka the Joker and Harley Quinn. The bulk of the plot will reportedly unfold at Arkham Psychiatric Hospital. The film also stars Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Jacob Lofland.

"I actually think it makes wonderful sense." Beetz said in an interview last year. "I wasn't really surprised by that Todd has always had a creative approach to the character. I love musicals, and I think of them as the characters are feeling and experiencing so much that they can only sing and dance about it, whether in sorrow or in joy. And I can actually see that within myself as well, because singing and dancing is quite a cathartic experience for me. I was going through a really, really difficult time at one point in my life, and I just started dancing and crying by myself. And that was an expression that matched where I was at that moment. And so, I can see Arthur, who is feeling and experiencing so much, dancing and singing about it. He's the Joker, so I think it makes sense to me."

When We Can Expect It

The Joker: Folie a Deux will be released exactly one year from now - on 4 October 2024.
