'The Black Phone' director Scott Derrickson has laid out the conditions under which he will agree to direct the sequel
Scott Derrickson - the director of mystical horror 'The Black Phone' has stated that he is definitely interested in making a sequel, but it will only be made on one condition.
Here's What We Know
Based on a short story by Joe Hill, "The Black Phone" plunged viewers into the supernatural basement of a sinister kidnapper whose victims could communicate from the netherworld through a phone.
Such a plot is rich with possible sequels that could unfold in the past, present or future. Derrickson confirmed that a second part is definitely still a possibility, but only if Ethan Hawke returns to the role of the Kidnapper, otherwise there's no point in telling the story.
Speaking to ComicBook in support of the film "V/H/S/85", which Derrickson helped create, the director responded to a question about a sequel to "The Black Phone":
"It's possible. It's not a definite thing, but if it does become definite, you'll be the first to hear." As for the importance of Hawke, Derrickson added: "I can tell you this much, I wouldn't make a Black Phone sequel without Ethan. I don't think there'd be any point in doing that."
Original work author Joe Hill also pointed out that the mask worn by Snatcher would be a significant element of any future films.
"There have been some really, really good conversations about a sequel. And the thing is, as soon as I saw the mask, which was designed by Tom Savini and Jason Baker, as soon as I saw the mask I thought, 'If this film is a hit, there'll be a sequel,' because the mask is so iconic" - said Hill in 2022. "It is like Freddy Krueger's glove, it is like Michael Myers' mask, it is this thing where it's the imagery, iconic imagery, that haunts people's sleep. And, look, in horror, guys like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and Frankenstein, and Dracula, none of these guys stay buried. They all claw their way out of the grave for a sequel and then a threequel."
When We Can Expect It
It's obviously very early to talk about a release date or at least the start of filming on the sequel, but while we wait for new information on the future of The Black Phone Part 2, it's not unreasonable to check out Derrickson's latest creation, the anthology film V/H/S/85, which will be released on Shudder on October 6.
