Back to Birmingham: the plot of the new six-part This Town project from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been revealed
Steven Knight, creator of the legendary Peaky Blinders series, will give the world a new British TV series This Town in six parts for BBC One.
Here's What We Know
"This Town" takes us back to the same Birmingham where the events of "Peaky Blinders" unfolded, but in the 1980s.
According to the BBC, the drama, written by Steven Knight and directed by Paul Whittington, is about "a large family and four young people caught up in the world of ska and two-tone music" popular in Birmingham and Coventry, which originated in the late 1970s.
The title is apparently a reference to the 1971 hit "Ghost Town" by The Specials, a musical group that hails from the same city where the events of the new series unfold.
The song describes the dark and depressing times in recession-ridden and socially disordered Britain during Margaret Thatcher's reign. The lyrics of the song read: "This town, is coming like a ghost town, all the clubs have been closed down….Bands won't play no more, too much fighting on the dance floor."
These lines certainly echo the mood of the series as described by the BBC: "moment of huge social tensions and unrest".
Also, the BBC states that the music was not only the source of the title, but will be the focus of the entire project. The This Town series is produced by Kudos and Nebulastar, with Universal Music Group's Mercury Studios responsible for the soundtrack.
Marc Robinson, co-president of Mercury Studios, shared with the BBC: "We are thrilled to be able to creatively engage artists and help tell the story through new and original recordings."
The roles of the four main characters in the series are played by Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger, Ben Rose and Eve Austin from 'You'. Michelle Dockery, best known for 'The Gentlemen', and 'The Policeman' star David Dawson will also be involved.
When We Can Expect It
An exact release date for "This Town" has not yet been set. But according to preliminary information, the series will appear on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2024.
