Cult film 'Constantine' returns with sequel: Director promises resumption of filming after Thanksgiving
"Constantine 2" director Francis Lawrence shares exciting news about the sequel, which is set to resume production after the Thanksgiving holiday.
Here's What We Know
The original 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves as John Constantine, a supernatural detective battling demons and mystical creatures, won a devoted audience who have been waiting for the story to continue for years. Expectations were met and Warner Bros. took the initiative to bring the sequel to life, appointing Akiva Goldsman as screenwriter and Francis Lawrence was asked to take the director's chair.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence spoke about the difficulties the team faced in developing the film. The character was trying to head in different directions, with NBC creating a television series and J.J. Abrams showing his interest in the project. During this time, the DC Universe has suffered changes, but the "Constantine 2" team did regain control of the character and is preparing to restart the project after a temporary hiatus due to a strike:
"We’ve had many obstacles [with production]. Me, Keanu, Akiva have tried over the years to wrangle some control of the character again, because it had been handed over. I think NBC did a TV show, and then J.J. [Abrams] was going to try and do something. And then the regime at DC changed, and they’ve got their plans. But luckily, we managed to wrangle some control and started working on some ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about. It’s still the very beginning, as the strike put it on hold for a little bit. So we’re probably going to start getting back together after Thanksgiving, and dig back in to try and crack it.".
The future of the film was in doubt due to changes in the DC Studios cinematic universe under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, Keanu Reeves has previously announced that he is in talks with Gunn regarding the upcoming project. While specific plot details remain a secret, the actor has expressed his sincere desire for fans to eventually have the opportunity to delve into the next chapter of Constantine's supernatural adventures.
Francis Lawrence, along with Akiva Goldsman and Keanu Reeves, joined forces to write the script. After productive meetings to determine the direction of the film, all three came to the conclusion that they were determined to create a true R-rated version of the film.
