The latest big update about Star Trek 4 says it may be the "final chapter"

The great news is that work continues on Star Trek 4. The not-so-great news is that potentially the fourth instalment is being referred to as the "final chapter", suggesting that the adventures of the cast of characters from the rebooted Star Trek series are coming to an end.

Here's What We Know

It's worth noting that the upcoming film will not feature actors from the rebooted J.J. Abrams Star Trek.

Star Trek 4's path has not been the easiest. Work on the film has been intermittent since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016, and there have been many changes in that time.

Originally, J.D. Payne and Patrick McCay were set to direct, with Chris Hemsworth set to return as George Kirk. That version of Star Trek 4 stalled when Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pine backed out of the film.

Next in the director's chair was Quentin Tarantino himself, but he too eventually left the post.

Screenwriters changed at the same rate - Kalinda Vasquez, the screenwriter of Star Trek: Discovery, was invited to write a new version of Star Trek 4. When that failed too, Matt Shakman, who had previously worked on WandaVision, was appointed to direct the project, which would have been shot from a script by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet. However, Beer subsequently turned down the job, opting for Pet Sematary: Bloodlines.

Shakman has also left the project to direct Marvel Studios' "Fantastic Four," and a new director has yet to be confirmed.

It's still unclear when "Star Trek 4" will be released or even who will be joining the cast or directing the project, but the continued work is an important indicator to the fact that the film will still see the light of day.
