Alcoholism, ADHD and deep anxiety: Kit Harington opens up about his mental health issues after playing Jon Snow on Game of Thrones
Kit Harington has opened up about his difficulties with mental health after 'Game of Thrones'.
Here's What We Know
Harington played one of the most popular roles in the entire series - Night's Watch brother Jon Snow. And as it turned out, carrying this burden of popularity was not so easy.
In a fresh interview, the actor admitted that after completing filming on "Game of Thrones" he faced alcoholism, ADHD and deep anxiety. The severity and intensity of the symptoms made Harington concerned about his well-being and he went to rehab.
"I realized that my life was hinging on this" Harington told the Hidden 20% podcast. "Luckily, it was the right place at the right time. I managed to forge a new life from there."
The actor had previously noted that he felt the manifestation of his first symptoms when the focus of Game of Thrones shifted to Jon Snow (after his "death" and resurrection between seasons 5 and 6). In his own words, Harington didn't expect the level of fame and attention that accompanied it.
"My darkest period was when the show seemed to become so much about Jon when he died and came back. I didn't like the focus of the whole show coming onto Jon. When you become the cliffhanger of a TV show and a TV show probably at the height of its power, the focus on you is f—–g terrifying."
Harington did resort to treatment in time and he managed to build a happy life, including a family life.
During the filming of "Game of Thrones" in 2011, Kit met his colleague on the series Rose Leslie, who played the role of the wildling Ygritte. A romance spiralled between them and the couple got engaged in 2017 and married a year later in 2018. At the moment, the couple have two children whom they prefer not to show to the public.
Since completing rehab, Harington has only had one major role - Dane Whitman in Marvel's Eternals.
