Budget Star Wars: Why The Mandalorian & Grogu will be filmed with a much more modest investment compared to the last films in the franchise

According to The Bespin Bulletin, the new "The Mandalorian & Groguu" film from the "Star Wars" universe will have a much more modest budget compared to "The Last Jedi" and "The Rise of Skywalker".

Here's What We Know

The Mandalorian & Groguu, which is being helmed by director Jon Favreau, will begin shooting in Los Angeles on 17 June 2024. The film is set to continue the story seen in The Mandalorian series, but it's not yet clear if the film will replace the fourth season or be an addition to it. Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni did not give a definite answer to these questions, but expressed a lot of enthusiasm for the project, noting director Jon Favreau's deep understanding of the Star Wars universe.

With all the enthusiasm, it is reported that the resources for the new project will not exceed $120 million, which is significantly less than the standard $300 million for films in the series.

True, the cost of the first season of "The Mandalorian" also does not exceed $120 million (the cost of each series +/- $15 million). Considering that "The Mandalorian & Groguy" will only have a two-hour running time instead of the full 6-7 hour season, it's hard to consider such a budget "insufficient" to make a successful film, especially in this day and age when big film projects spend huge sums, often becoming objects of criticism and box office failures.

When We Can Expect It

"The Mandalorian & Groguy" is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026.
