Chinese developers have invented a DVD disk that can hold 220,000 movies, an incredible amount of content
It seems that everything in the world is indeed cyclical and there is a possibility that DVD discs will return to the market again, but with already maximally improved technical indicators.
Here's What We Know
According to a report published in the journal Nature, a Chinese research team was able to create a disc with more than 100 layers, which allows it to store about 220,000 full-length movies, which is unavailable to any other physical storage medium.
By the way, at the moment, a standard single-layer disc can hold a two-hour long video clip, while a dual-layer disc can hold four hours of good quality video.
We increase the capacity of [optical data storage] to the petabit level by extending the planar recording architecture to three dimensions with hundreds of layers, meanwhile breaking the optical diffraction limit barrier of the recorded spots.
The only question that remains is whether such a development is relevant nowadays?
As technology advances, shops are reducing the number of DVDs and other physical media in favour of new technologies. For example, Best Buy, a large chain of shops, has decided to completely remove DVD and other media sections from its retail shops, arguing that the way people watch films and shows today is different from what they were used to decades ago. Therefore, the company chose to use the freed up space to offer new and innovative technology to customers.
Netflix also took a step forward by shutting down its DVD streaming service last year. Netflix's founders point out that DVDs have changed the way content is consumed, but the future belongs to streaming.
