Microsoft will make it easier to switch default apps in Windows 11
Microsoft is promising significant changes to Windows in terms of which apps control which file types open by default, and how users can choose which apps to pin to the Windows desktop Start menu or taskbar.
Here's What We Know
With the new URI, developers will be able to send users directly to a specific location in settings to change the default app for certain file types or links. Microsoft will also begin testing a separate API that will allow apps to pin a primary or secondary tile to the taskbar.
When Windows 11 came out, it had a confusing and cumbersome process for setting default apps that was a step backwards from Windows 10 and required users to go through each individual file type rather than just selecting their preferred web browser or image editor, so the new system should simplify the experience for ordinary users.
Of course, getting developers to actually use the new Windows features is always a challenge, but Microsoft says it's ready to lead the way by building support for the new menus in the Edge browser as soon as they become available.
