Microsoft has started selling spare parts for Surface devices so that users can carry out out-of-warranty repairs themselves
Microsoft is starting to sell replacement components for its Surface devices through the Microsoft Store. Surface owners can now replace their displays, batteries, SSDs, and other parts.
Here's What We Know
Tim McGuiggan, vice president of Device Services and Product Development at Microsoft, said: "We are pleased to offer component replacement to technically inclined consumers for out-of-warranty repairs on their own. With the purchase of a replacement component, you will receive the part and the appropriate related components, such as screws, if necessary."
To repair Microsoft Surface devices, you can purchase tools from iFixit, which has been working with Microsoft since 2021. iFixit offers battery covers to protect against damage during repairs, separation stands to help separate the screen glass, and special tools for replacing the screen.
Microsoft's official Surface replacement components will initially be available in the United States, Canada and France, as well as through commercial resellers. The company plans to expand the availability of spare parts in other markets in the future.
It is worth noting that not all Surface models will have spare components available, such as displays, batteries, and SSDs. Currently, Microsoft only sells a replacement stand for the Surface Pro 7, but newer models, such as the Surface Pro 9, have a variety of replacement components, including displays, SSDs, batteries, USB-C ports, Surface Connect charging ports, and even a speaker, Wi-Fi, and thermal modules.
