Arrowhead Game Studios responds to players' criticism of GameGuard anti-cheat system in Helldivers 2
In response to player criticism about the use of the controversial GameGuard system in Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios has published a statement explaining its decision to use this system at the core level.
Here's What We Know
The developer explains that despite the fact that GameGuard is classified as a rootkit and works at the kernel level, it is one of the most effective anti-cheat tools. They emphasise that the system does not remain on the player's computer after the game is uninstalled and assure that anti-cheat complies with global privacy laws, such as the European GDPR, as it does not collect sensitive information about players.
When asked about the need for an anti-cheat system in Helldivers 2, given its cooperative nature with no competitive elements, CTO Peter Lindgren explains that the studio wants to protect non-competitive players from the negative consequences caused by cheaters.
Lindgren talks about the case of the original Helldivers game, when the lack of anti-cheat measures led to the spread of cheats, which negatively affected the completion of missions by non-cheaters by changing the rewards for completing missions.
Where To Play
Helldivers 2 is currently available on PC and PlayStation 5.
