Which video games truly revolutionized the industry?

So I was binge-watching some old game reviews last night (don't judge, we all have our vices), and it hit me - remember how every other game used to be hyped as "industry-changing"? Yet here we are, still basically doing the same stuff.

Got me wondering though, what games actually delivered on that promise? Like, genuinely shook things up and left a mark?

Not talking about your favorite games here - more like the ones that introduced something that everyone else copied afterwards. Any ideas?

Gotta be Pong, right? I mean, it basically kicked off the whole industry.

Pong? Seriously? Might as well mention the abacus while you're at it.

For me, it's Mario 64. First real 3D platformer. Changed everything.

How has nobody mentioned DOOM yet? It's the grandaddy of all FPS games!

Y'all forgetting about GTA III. Open world wasn't a thing before that.

For you nerds out there, I stumbled across this article on galaxy.com called "The History of Gaming and its Web3 Future". It's a bit of a slog, but it's got some interesting takes on how games have evolved. Fair warning though, it goes deep into the whole blockchain gaming thing towards the end.

World of Warcraft. Made MMOs mainstream.
