Which best vpn for tor browser combo actually works?

So I've been running this small privacy blog for about 2 years now (nothing huge, just trying to help regular folks stay safe online). Recently got a ton of requests to compare different VPN+Tor setups since there's so much conflicting info out there. Problem is, every time I test something, I get different results. Some days connection drops constantly, other days speed tanks to unusable levels.

Been trying to create a fair comparison chart for my readers but at this point I'm totally lost. Some configurations work great for a week then suddenly stop working after updates. Getting pretty frustrated since I promised this guide to my subscribers like a month ago.

Anyone here actually use a VPN+Tor combo long-term that doesn't suck? Not looking for the typical "just use Tor alone" answer (I cover that already) - specifically need reliable VPN+Tor setups that maintain decent speeds and don't leak. Willing to pay for quality since this is for my content

hate to be that guy but there's a reason you're getting inconsistent results - these services constantly change their configs to block tor traffic. What works today probably won't next month

Creator to creator: don't promise specific vpn recommendations. Instead, teach your audience methodology for testing any service themselves. More valuable content that won't go outdated

ask yourself why you're combining them first. privacy? bypassing censorship? avoiding ISP throttling? each has different optimal setups - no one-size-fits-all answer

I've been running nordvpn with tor for about 8 months for testing stuff on my security channel. Performance is decent if you pick low-traffic servers and connect to vpn first, then launch tor. Not perfect but stable enough for demos

your blog readers are getting bad advice if you're suggesting this combo.Vpns literally create a permanent record of your entry point into tor network. Entire point of tor is avoiding exactly this

you're approaching this wrong - different use cases need different setups: • journalism/whistleblowing: tor only • bypassing geo-blocks: vpn only • evading targeted surveillance: tails OS • casual privacy: either but not both

Exactly! Plus the setup changes based on threat model. Governments? Corporations? Angry ex? Each requires different approach

lmao content creators and their promises. "guys today we're comparing 10 vpns with tor!!" proceeds to read marketing material while showing speedtest results

You're fighting a losing battle friend. Tested 9 vpns with tor over 6 months for my thesis. All eventually got flagged by something in the chain. Temporary solution at best

might want to disclose to your readers that many exit nodes are monitored by various entities. combining with vpn doesn't fix this fundamental issue

Check that security analysis on cyberproof about tor browser risks. Implemented their fixes on my rig and fixed major socket leaks. Stop stacking services without understanding the protocol stack. Ur just security theater otherwise lmao

I work at a major vpn provider and can tell you we actively try to detect and throttle tor traffic. Most commercial vpns do the same despite marketing claims

instead of reviewing specific services, maybe explain the technical concepts? like how circuit isolation works and why adding single points of failure undermines tor's design

microlab March 27, 2025, 12:09 a.m.

Curious - what metrics are you using to test? Raw speed isn't useful for most tor users. Connection stability and successful circuit completion matter more

don't forget to verify your tor browser installation hasn't been tampered with. Many issues trace back to modified binaries rather than vpn compatibility

This! Half the "tor doesn't work with my vpn" problems come from outdated browser bundles or modified versions. Always download fresh from official site

your subscribers probably just want straight talk: using both is overkill for average person, introduces complexity, and often breaks. Sometimes simplest answer is right
