Self-driving cars freaking me out... but also kinda impressed??

So I'm sitting at this intersection yesterday and the Tesla next to me just starts driving while the dude is legit scrolling Instagram. Not even looking up. Like wtf?? Part of me thinks it's cool af that we're living in the future, but also read about that crash in Phoenix last week where autopilot drove straight into a barrier?

My roommate's brother works on this computer vision stuff for autonomous cars and says we're in this sketchy middle phase where the tech is good enough that people trust it but still glitchy enough that maybe we shouldn't? Idk.

Anyone else conflicted about this? Like would you actually sleep or watch Netflix while your car drives? Or is this whole self-driving thing just asking for trouble? Curious what y'all think

Took uber in san francisco last week - driver admitted he sometimes naps on highway while car drives. We're not just beta testing tech, we're beta testing new human behaviors too

grandma got a car with lane assist and now refuses to drive without it. Calls it her "guardian angel" which is both cute and terrifying

dated someone who worked on autonomous systems. She refused to use her company's tech and drove a 90s honda with zero smart features. That told me everything

Autonomous software can be updated overnight while we sleep. My car literally drives differently today than yesterday. No other safety system works this way

"autopilot" should require same certification as actual pilots. 40 hours training minimum before touching the button. Change my mind

Spend like 30 mins watching tesla autopilot videos on youtube and you'll think differently. Some crazy impressive stuff like predicting accidents before they happen, but then next vid shows it confusing a tumbleweed with a pedestrian so... Mixed bag fr

societal shift happening faster than laws. crashed with autonomous feature engaged - who's liable? me? manufacturer? developer? my insurance doesn't even know

Evolution took millions of years to develop human reaction time. Silicon valley thinks they beat it in decade with cameras and some code lol

Humans evolved to throw spears not navigate highways at 80mph. Tech doesn't need to be perfect, just better than our monkey brains

Parking lot autonomous features completely broken in snow. Car thinks white ground is "no boundaries" and almost drove into frozen lake

my toddler waves at teslas because she thinks robots are driving them. Weirdly profound - next generation won't remember when cars needed humans

three weeks ownership: car phantom brakes for shadows, refuses to change lanes when sun glare hits camera, and thinks moon is yellow traffic light

Strange seeing people who trust facebook with all their data suddenly skeptical about trusting algorithms with driving

difference is facebook just shows me bad ads, autopilot can yeet me into oncoming traffic 💀

neighbor's kid hacked their tesla to make fart noises when detecting pedestrians. If teenagers can modify these systems, how secure are they really?

Car almost killed me taking exit at 70mph in rain, yet saved me from sideswipe I never saw coming
