Digital nomad reality check - tax nightmares and legal gray areas nobody warns you about

Been working remotely while traveling for past 18 months (software developer) and my tax situation has become absolute chaos. Started in Bali, then Portugal, now Croatia. Company's US-based but I haven't set foot there since 2023. Just got letter from IRS questioning my residency status and now freaking out about potential double taxation. My bank also threatening to close accounts because "suspicious login patterns" despite me notifying them about travel. Anyone else dealing with this mess? What solutions actually work? Tax professionals quoting me insane fees just for consultations. Wish I'd known what I was getting into before Instagram convinced me this lifestyle was paradise.

Learned this when I broke ankle in Thailand. Travel insurance called it "pre-existing condition" because I sprained it 5 years ago. $14k out of pocket
