Are we headed towards online censorship disguised as "protection"?

Been watching this whole internet censorship debate blow up lately. swear every week some new site/app starts restricting what you can post. On one hand, yeah nobody wants their kids seeing the worst of the internet. On the other hand...slippery slope much??

Not taking sides but noticed how easy it is to get shadowbanned now just for talking about certain topics. Yet total garbage still flows freely on these same platforms??

Wondering where yall stand on this. Is there a middle ground between digital wild west and thought police? or we just doomed lol

bkackjack March 5, 2025, 10:44 p.m.

bruh the internet was better when it was the wild west. Now it's just corporate overlords telling us what we can think. Miss the days when people could handle seeing stuff they disagree with without crying to the mods πŸ˜’

GODLIKE March 6, 2025, 1:21 p.m.

Im sorry but some of you have literally never been harassed online and it shows?? Try being a woman/minority on these platforms for ONE DAY before crying about your "freeze peach" πŸ™„ Moderation exists for a reason!!!

lmaooo at ppl seriously acting like facebook removing their conspiracy theory is equivalent to actual government censorship. read a history book ffs

DaN1eeX March 8, 2025, 5:27 p.m.

Spent 2 years deleting the absolute worst humanity has to offer at FB. The nightmares haven't stopped. Trust me when i say 99% of removed content is stuff that would make you vomit. Not your edgy memes

OhNooo March 8, 2025, 11:18 p.m.

did management ever push you guys to remove specific political content? genuine question

Monomax March 10, 2025, 7:14 p.m.

these companies flip flop between "champions of free expression" and "private business, our rules" depending on which makes them more $$$. Zero actual principles

crazy-brother March 11, 2025, 9:10 p.m.

Yall dramatic af comparing content warnings to authoritarian regimes. Touch grass maybe? Nobody's kicking down your door for posting pepe memes

28den March 12, 2025, 10:22 p.m.

Got my 7-year account nuked for quoting a movie with a swear word. Meanwhile actual scammer accounts sending links to malware stay up for months. Genius system πŸ‘

dantist March 14, 2025, 12:11 a.m.

the algorithm recommended alex jones to my 12yo nephew but demonetized an educational channel discussing renaissance art for "nudity" lmao. nothing makes sense anymore

Dare-Devils March 18, 2025, 3:32 p.m.

Ditched mainstream platforms completely. Our little forum has 200 members, zero corporate oversight, members vote on rules, and somehow we manage not to descend into chaos

careful with that - our community got erased after 4 years when hosting provider decided our anime discussions violated TOS. no appeal, no backup, everything gone

darkangel99 March 25, 2025, 12:03 p.m.

what nobody mentions is the Chilling Effect - people self-censoring out of fear, avoiding entire topics because the boundaries of acceptable speech are intentionally kept vague and shifting

Leilala March 29, 2025, 4:50 p.m.

some of yall really telling on yourselves when u get mad about "censorship" lmaoooo... funny how the loudest ones complaining always have comment histories full of 🚩🚩🚩

Writing filtering algorithms for content platforms taught me they catch harmless stuff constantly while missing actual problems. The tech simply isn't capable of what executives promise

Jefree April 9, 2025, 1:17 p.m.

Anybody else remember when we believed internet would create unprecedented access to knowledge and connect humanity? Instead we got echo chambers and mental health crisis

4342 April 16, 2025, 10:40 p.m.

u realize platforms only care about keeping advertisers happy right?? they dgaf about "safety" - they remove whatever might scare off companies paying millions for ads

YUO April 21, 2025, 12:29 a.m.

Me watching this debate after being online since 1997: first time? Everything becomes corporate eventually. Small communities die, big ones get sanitized for profit. Cycle repeats
