"I live off crypto" crowd taking over my town - anyone else seeing this trend?

Anybody else noticing entire communities being taken over by crypto people? My hometown in costa rica went from sleepy surf spot to "crypto hub" in like 18 months. These dudes rolling in with their ethereum and bitcoin money, outbidding locals 5x on housing, opening weird coworking spaces with "web3 vibes" whatever tf that means.

I bartend at night and these people NEVER stop talking about their coins/trades/protocols. Its always "im building something revolutionary" but they just seem to sit at cafes all day looking stressed at charts on laptops?

Locals getting priced out of housing, but restaurants booming. Mixed feelings because tips are incredible but watching families i grew up with move inland because some guy cashed out dogecoin and now pays in 1 day what they make in 2 weeks.

Weirdest part is how they move in packs? Like entire discord groups deciding "this town is the next crypto spot" and suddenly 200 people with identical backstories arrive. Feels like strange digital cult.

Anyone experiencing this elsewhere or actually living this lifestyle? Genuinely curious how sustainable this is or if they'll all vanish when bear market hits.

They swarmed puerto escondido last year. Same script - "we bring money to community" while transforming everything into sanitized tech paradise. Minute btc dropped below 30k they ghosted town en masse. Devastated local economy after locals renovated specifically for them. Vultures

Left banking job 2021, made decent (not life-changing) crypto... now i stake/trade from mexico. yes we cluster because: visa rules similar, reliable internet zones limited, safety in numbers, and fomo. not all oblivious colonizers tho. personally learn spanish, volunteer locally, date non-expats, attend community meetings

don't lump us all together k thx byeeeee~

$100k salary → 40% taxes + $3k rent + $2k living expenses = $1k/month savings

$100k crypto → geo-arbitrage → 0-5% taxes + $500 rent + $1k living expenses = $6.5k/month savings

Dated one of these dudes for 3 months. The anxiety was unbearable. Constant phone checking, waking up at 3am to "catch market moves", friends only talking tokens. Money was flowing but zero joy in life. Relationship ended when he panic sold our vacation funds during crash. Money ain't worth the mental health cost of that lifestyle

bartended at "crypto hotspot" in lisbon 2021-2023. witnessed full cycle from arrogant boom ("buying buildings with bitcoin bro") to desperate bust ("anyone hiring?"). funniest part was watching them try to return designer clothes they bought just weeks earlier. now our clientele back to normal tourists and i kinda miss the insane tips but not the vibe

These people DESTROYED my childhood hometown in Philippines. electricity grid couldn't handle mining rigs → constant brownouts for residents. Rent up 340% in 18 months. Family restaurant serving food 40 years replaced by açaí bowl spot. Disgusts me seeing them posing on instagram as "giving back" when they've extraction colonized entire economy. No different than mining companies, just digital minerals

This is textbook predatory gentrification but with extra tech steps. Capital flows from wealthy countries to vulnerable economies through individual actors instead of corporations. Traditional gentrification at least required physical buildings and local construction jobs. Crypto version extracts value with minimal local investment beyond consumption

older generations judged millennials/gen z for "wasting money" instead of building wealth conventionally... now judging them for building wealth unconventionally and spending it on lifestyle design? maybe the normal, "responsible" systems utterly failed these generations and they're adapting creatively

Neighbor converted entire apartment building into crypto hostel. Noise complaints every night with new group chanting about "going to the moon". Property manager straight admitted preferring them because they never question prices. Entire street now unaffordable. Meanwhile half these dudes broke af hoping next coin will save them. Glorified gambling addicts wrecking communities
