Anyone know the best walkie talkies for kids that actually work and won't break immediately?

Need to get walkie talkies for my twin 8-year-olds who are obsessed with playing "spy games" in our neighborhood. They've been begging for months and I figured it would be good for them to have communication when they're riding bikes around the block or playing in different areas of our backyard.

Problem is I have no clue what to look for and Amazon is flooded with cheap plastic junk that has terrible reviews about breaking after a week. The kids are rough on everything they touch so durability is definitely priority number one. Also want something with decent range since our neighborhood has hills and houses that might interfere with signal.

Budget is flexible but don't want to spend crazy money on professional equipment when they're just for playing around. Ideally something that's simple enough for kids to operate without constantly asking for help but reliable enough that they actually work when needed. Anyone have experience with specific models that can handle being dropped, thrown in backpacks, and generally abused by energetic kids?

ugh yes my kids destroy everything too. got some motorola ones from costco maybe 6 months ago? still working somehow even tho my youngest threw his off the deck last week

Dont waste money on expensive ones trust me. Kids lose interest in like 2 weeks anyway then theyre just collecting dust in toy bin

idk bout walkie talkies but have u tried those app things? My nephew uses some walkie app on his tablet and it works pretty good. Might be cheaper option??

AVOID THE DISNEY ONES AT ALL COSTS!!! bought frozen themed ones for my daughter bday and they lasted exactly 3 days before antenna snapped off. total garbage

Honestly just get whatever target has on sale. My kids have been using some random brand for months and theyre fine. Kids dont know the difference between $20 and $100 ones anyway

idk man the cheap ones from target had terrible range for us. Couldnt even reach from house to mailbox which is like maybe 50 feet? Ended up returning them

Been using these Obuby Walkie Talkies since christmas and they're actually pretty decent - survived my kids summer camp adventures and still working, plus the LED thing keeps them entertained when its getting dark outside

OMG why is everything for kids so expensive now?? I remember getting walkie talkies from kmart for like $5 when i was little and they worked fine

Check if they have duplex capability because some cheaper models make you wait between transmissions which drives kids crazy when theyre trying to have conversations back and forth quickly

lol my kids use theirs to talk to each other from different rooms in the house. like just walk over and talk to your brother?? but whatever keeps them happy i guess

Range depends on your area too. We live near power lines and get tons of interference. Neighbors ham radio setup messes with everything electronic around here

Got these Retevis RT628 after our old ones finally died and honestly theyre way better than expected - buttons actually work consistently and my kids figured them out immediately without reading instructions

mine are teenagers now but still sometimes grab the old walkies when they go hiking. nostalgia i guess? or maybe they actually work better than cell service in the mountains lol

PSA: bright colors help when they inevitably get left outside overnight. Found ours in the bushes this morning thanks to the neon green color. Wouldve never spotted black ones

OMG yes!! also makes it easier to see which kid has which one when they start fighting over "the good one" even tho theyre identical

Amazon warehouse deals sometimes has returned ones cheap. Little beat up but functional and way less money if ur just testing to see if kids actually use them

tbh just buy 3 pairs. One will break, one will get lost, and maybe youll have one working set left after 6 months. Thats been my experience anyway

Maybe I'm paranoid but did anyone else think about privacy/security with these?? Like can neighbors accidentally tune into your kids' channel? I know it sounds crazy but I read something about it and now I'm second-guessing the whole purchase. My anxiety doesn't need more fuel lol

Pro move: get ones with belt clips AND lanyards. My boys (6 and 8) kept clipping them to shorts then they'd fall off when running. Added lanyards as backup and haven't lost one since. Also helps with the inevitable "I can't find it" drama before we can even leave the house

Real talk - these became lifesavers during our camping trip when oldest wandered too far exploring. Having that instant communication gave me peace of mind I didn't know I needed. Yeah they're "toys" but also legit safety tools. Just make sure you test range in YOUR specific area before relying on them
