Realme today unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the GT5 Pro. Perhaps one of its main features is hand gesture recognition.

Details

LG once tried to implement Hand ID hand unlocking feature on the G8 ThinQ smartphone, but it didn't work out very well. Now, Realme is introducing a similar feature on the Realme GT5 Pro.

As shown in the video, all you have to do is bring your palm to the smartphone's screen and the 32-megapixel selfie camera counts its fingerprint. It's unlikely the camera stays on all the time, so it likely works in conjunction with an ultrasonic proximity sensor.

Realme says the palm unlock feature is faster than facial recognition, thanks in part to machine learning using more than 10,000 patterns. It's also secure, as proven by testing using more than 10 million attacks. But it's still optional - the good old fingerprint scanner under the screen is here too.

On top of that, the smartphone understands some hand gestures. A pinch gesture will toggle the recent apps list, and from there you can gently swipe left or right to view the latest apps. Holding your index finger will toggle cursor control, and hovering over a point will trigger a click. A three-finger palm gesture lets you take a screenshot. Flipping your palm over will return you to the Home screen. Pointing your thumb to the left toggles the "back" action. Finally, bringing your palm to the screen will switch it off.
