The US Department of Defence has ordered AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. Some of them will be delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, while foreign customers will receive more than a third of the entire batch.

Here's What We Know

AMRAAM is an all-weather medium-range guided air-to-air missile. The AIM-120D version is capable of destroying aerial targets within a radius of 180 kilometres. It is equipped with a solid propellant engine and can reach speeds of more than 1.3 km/s.

RTX has received $192m from the US Department of Defence for the delivery of AIM-120 missiles. In addition to the US, customers include Ukraine, the UK, Canada, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Norway, the Netherlands, Qatar, Finland, Hungary, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Singapore.

The contract runs until November 29, 2024. The $7.7 million will come from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) fund. How many AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles will be transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces is not specified in the Pentagon's statement. As for the use, due to the lack of Western aircraft, Ukraine uses AMRAAMs in NASAMS air defence systems.
