Russia has officially announced that the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles with a range of up to 18,000 kilometres, capable of carrying a nuclear charge with a power of 7.5 megatons, have been put on combat duty

The Russian company Roscosmos had planned to put the RS-28 Sarmat strategic missile systems (SS-X-30 according to NATO classification) on combat duty at the end of 2022. However, it has only managed to do it now.

Here's What We Know

RS-28 "Sarmat" is a silo-based strategic missile system. It includes an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a warhead weighing 10 tonnes to anywhere in the world.

Development of the complex began about 20 years ago to replace the R-36M2, which has been in service since 1988. The new intercontinental ballistic missile is capable of carrying a 7.5 megaton nuclear charge. The launch range is 18,000 kilometres.

The first test of the missile took place on 20 April last year at the Plesetsk cosmodrome. At the time, the Russians reported that the launch achieved all of its goals, but it is unclear how true this statement is.
