Ukraine's modified Neptun anti-ship missile has received a homing system with a thermal image
The Ukrainian Neptun missile has once again been in the spotlight. The publication The War Zone writes about an interesting feature of the modernised version of the munition.
Here's What We Know
"Neptune" is a Ukrainian complex of anti-ship cruise missiles. Specialists managed to modify the missile to strike ground targets. The weight of the warhead was 350 kg, and the launch range was 280 km to 400 km. It is not known how the dimensions of the missile have changed and whether a new launcher had to be created.
The WarZone cites an anonymous Ukrainian source and writes that the modified version of the Neptun missile received a homing system with thermal imaging. It allows searching for and capturing targets using pre-loaded images.
This information emerged after the publication of satellite images of Engels airfield in russia, where Tu-95MS nuclear bombers are protected by car tyres. Perhaps such a move will improve the defence of strategic aircraft by changing the thermal imaging signature of targets.
The bombers will still not be completely safe, but the missile accuracy may decrease. On the other hand, the aforementioned airfield in Engels is 650 kilometres from Ukraine. It is possible that car tyres are a defence against drones. Recently, kamikaze drones destroyed several Il-76 aircraft and one Tu-22M3 strategic bomber 600-700 kilometres from the Ukrainian border.
