The Indian Army has ordered Pralay ballistic missiles with a launch range of up to 500 km and speeds of over 7,400 km/h in the terminal phase of flight
A few years ago, India began developing short-range tactical ballistic missiles as an analogue to the Dong Feng-12, Hyunmoo 2 and Iskander. They were named Pralay, which translates from Indian as "Apocalypse". The Ministry of Defence recently approved the delivery of a new batch of missiles.
Here's What We Know
Approval of the request will allow the Indian Army to create an additional missile regiment on the border with China and Pakistan. The Pralay ballistic missile has a maximum launch range of 500 km.
The fragmentation warhead weighs 350-700kg. In the terminal phase of flight, the Indian ballistic missile can reach a speed of Mach 6.1 (7,470 km/h). In the future, India wants a new version of the missile with an extended launch range of up to 1,000 kilometres.
Pralay is in service not only with the Army but also with the Indian Air Force. As of spring 2023, a total of 250 short-range ballistic missiles have been ordered at a cost of nearly $1 billion.
