Taiwan has developed two modernised versions of the Sky Bow III surface-to-air missile system to complement the Patriot system and intercept missiles at altitudes of up to 100km
Taiwan plans to purchase Patriot missile defence systems with PAC-3 interceptors. However, the island state not only relies on American weapons, but also tries not to forget about its own developments.
Here's What We Know
Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science & Technology (NCSIST) has developed two modernised versions of the Sky Bow III surface-to-air missile system. They are called Strong Bow I and Strong Bow II.
Detailed technical parameters of the new systems are not yet specified. However, it is known that Strong Bow I and Strong Bow II will be able to intercept targets at a maximum altitude of 70 kilometres and 100 kilometres respectively. For comparison, Sky Bow III can destroy airborne thunderstorms at an altitude of up to 45 kilometres.
The new missile interceptors have improved engines and enhanced jamming defences. Strong Bow I has passed all tests and is ready for mass production. Strong Bow II is still undergoing the necessary tests.
The new air defence systems will be part of Taiwan's missile defence system. It now includes the Sky Bow III and Patriot land-based systems along with the Sky Word II sea-based systems.
