Saudi Arabia threatens to build an atomic bomb if Iran gets nuclear weapons
Saudi Arabia is poised to become a nuclear power. This would be the Kingdom's response to Iran's actions.
Here's What We Know
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made a statement to this effect. He claims that his country could quickly get an atomic bomb if Iran acquires nuclear weapons.
According to the Crown Prince, Saudi Arabia does not want to develop unconventional weapons. However, Mohammed bin Salman says the development of Iran's nuclear programme leaves no other choice.
In February 2023, we wrote that Iran had managed to harvest uranium enriched to 84 per cent. This means that only a 6% increase in the level remains before obtaining a nuclear weapon. At the same time, officials say that Iranian centrifuges are incapable of increasing the share of the 235 U isotope to more than 60%.
There are currently eight countries with nuclear weapons: the US, China, Russia, the UK, France, India, Pakistan and North Korea. Unofficially, the club includes Israel. However, only the first five states legitimately possess nuclear weapons, i.e. under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
