The Republic of Korea will develop an anti-ship aircraft missile with a range of 300 kilometres that can destroy targets on the ground and reach speeds of more than 3,000 kilometres per hour
The Republic of Korea is developing a new aircraft missile. Formally, it is positioned as an anti-ship missile, but it will be able to hit targets on the ground.
Here's What We Know
The relevant information was announced during a recent seminar on the technological development of aviation weapon systems. The prospective air-launched missile will be armed with two types of warheads.
The Republic of Korea has previously developed multi-mode homing heads that can be mounted on different types of missiles. For example, on cruise missiles, land-based anti-ship missiles and L-SAM interceptors for surface-to-air operations.
The new missile will have a weight of 940 kg, a diameter of 350-400 mm and a length of about 6 metres. It will have a launch range of 300 kilometres. In flight, the missile will be able to reach a speed of Mach 2.5 or 3,062 km/h. LIG Nex1 is expected to be the prime contractor. Tests are scheduled for 2025.
