The US will deploy additional Patriot missile defence systems in the Middle East along with THAAD
More US missile defence systems will be deployed in the Middle East. This was announced by the US Department of Defence.
Here's What We Know
We have already written that the US will deploy the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) missile defence system in the region. It can intercept ballistic missiles at an altitude of up to 150 kilometres. Additional Patriot systems will also be deployed in the Middle East.
The Patriot system is also capable of shooting down ballistic targets, but not as high. This has already been demonstrated by Ukraine, which has two air defence systems in service from spring 2023.
There is currently no information on where the U.S. plans to install additional Patriot systems. A statement from the Department of Defence said the air defence systems will be deployed to locations across the Middle East to bolster the protection of US forces in the region.
