Ballistic missiles and kamikaze drones flying over the Red Sea. About a fortnight ago, the US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) shot down 15 drones and four missiles. Another missile was intercepted by a MIM-104 Patriot system deployed by Saudi Arabia.
The day before, Israel officially announced the use of the Arrow-3 missile defence system. The interceptor, costing about $3 million, successfully shot down the air threat over the Red Sea. According to Reuters, it was a ballistic missile launched by Iranian proxies from Yemen.
Amid escalation in the region, Jordan is asking the US to deploy Patriot systems. The kingdom fears that missiles could hit its territory if fired at Jerusalem. The last time the US deployed Patriot to Jordan was 10 years ago.
The US is beefing up air defences in the region. Late last month, the US defence department announced the impending deployment of THAAD and MIM-104 Patriot missile defence systems across the Middle East. In addition, several destroyers with anti-aircraft missiles of the Standard family are already in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. Fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-15E Strike Eagle fighters with air-to-air missiles have also arrived in the region.
