Following the SM-6 Block I, the Republic of Korea is buying AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles in Block II and Block II+ configurations for the F-35, F-15K and KF-16 fighters
The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale of another batch of missiles to the Republic of Korea. This time it is not the SM-6 Block I, but the Sidewinder air-to-air missile.
Here's What We Know
The Republic of Korea has requested the purchase of 42 AIM-9X missiles in Block II and Block II configurations. The agreement, potentially worth $52.1 million, also includes missiles for training and related equipment.
The AIMX-9X is designed primarily for air-to-air operations, although there are ground-launched versions. Development of the Block II version began 15 years ago. The missile has the ability to capture a target after launch, using the aircraft's on-board equipment.
The Sidewinder is manufactured by Raytheon. According to open sources, the AIM-9X can hit targets within a radius of more than 35 kilometres. However, the launch range is not officially specified. The Block II+ configuration has a special coating to reduce conspicuity.
The Republic of Korea is not a new operator of the Sidewinder. As part of the country's air force, AIM-9X carriers are fourth- and fifth-generation fighters: the F-15K Eagle. KF-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35A Lightning II.
