America's next-generation GBI interceptor successfully shot down a medium-range ballistic missile
The US has tested an upgraded missile defence system. The Missile Defence Agency of the US Department of Defence conducted the tests amid the growing threat from Iran and DPRK.
Here's What We Know
The GBI (Ground-Based Interceptor) interceptor successfully shot down a ballistic missile at an intermediate stage of flight. It will be a key component of the US ground-based missile defence system.
GBI launched from the US Space Force base Vandenberg, California. The successful test demonstrated the modernised missile interceptor's ability to rapidly counter threats.
GBI is designed to provide defence primarily against Iranian and North Korean intercontinental ballistic missiles. Most of the interceptors are located in underground bunkers at Fort Greely, Alaska.
The GBI with an exo-atmospheric warfare module took part in the test. It is called the Capability Enhanced-II Block 1 and was developed by RTX. The three-stage interceptor operated in two-stage mode to engage a short-range target.
