India may buy BrahMos missiles and other weapons worth $4 billion

The Indian government is close to allocating several billion dollars for BrahMos cruise missiles, air defence systems, radars and fighter jet engines.

Here's What We Know

The Security Cabinet has approved four projects totalling more than 350 billion rupees ($4 billion). As noted, the government plans to purchase BrahMos cruise missiles for the navy, air defence guns, ground-based air surveillance radars, and new engines for the MiG-29.

In particular, the agreement on the BrahMos missile will be signed in March. The contract provides for about 220 units for Indian frigates and destroyers. By the way, this is the largest order of such missiles for India.

BrahMos will be purchased in standard configurations with a range of 290 kilometres, as well as an improved version with a range of 450 kilometres.

The PJ-10 BrahMos is an Indo-Russian supersonic cruise missile that was primarily developed as a water-to-water anti-ship missile. However, it is also designed to engage ground targets.
