NASA fixes US satellite IBEX with one reset

It seems the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has consulted a computer repair service centre to fix a US satellite.

The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) research spacecraft has been in space for nearly 15 years. In February, NASA experts turned the satellite into emergency mode, as it ceased to respond to commands. The problem was solved with a simple reset.

The spacecraft could have reset itself, but NASA decided not to waste time. The scientists waited until IBEX comes as close as possible to our planet, and then gave the command to reset the satellite. According to the space agency, all the functions of the device work as usual.

IBEX was launched into space in mid-autumn 2008 by the L-1011 Stargazer and the Pegasus XL rocket. A key aim of the mission is to study how the solar wind interacts with the interstellar matter that fills the space between stars inside galaxies.

The IMEX-Lo and IBEX-Hi cameras on board the spacecraft are being used for this purpose. They record high-energy particles at different ranges.
