Canadian company to build world's first micro-modular nuclear reactor - it could power 5,000 people for 20 years
The world's first micro-modular nuclear reactor will be built at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories research centre in Ontario. It is expected to be completed by 2027.
Here's What We Know
The Canadian company Global First Power will build it. The firm's chief executive, Jos Diening, said the reactor could provide power for as many as 5,000 people for two decades. The volume of radioactive waste would be 1 cubic metre.
There are many people living in the northern part of the country who are not connected to Canada's general energy system. Global First Power wants to solve the problem of providing electricity to remote regions.
The micromodular rector will consist of 90 parts. The size of each of them will be comparable to the size of a car. All the modules will be developed at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, after which they will have to be transported to the desired location for assembly.
The first micro-module reactor will be used for demonstration purposes. It will provide power to Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.
