Star Wars Tatooine in our universe - scientists discover planet orbiting two stars

In 2020, astronomers discovered planet TOI-1338b, which orbits two stars like Tatooine in the George Lucas universe. Scientists recently discovered another planet in the same star system. It's called BEBOP-1c.

Here's What We Know

To begin with, we note that the system in which the planets orbit two stars is called circumbinary. So far, scientists know of only 12 such systems, but only two of them have more than one planet.

TOI-1338b was detected as it passed through the brighter of the two stars. Next, scientists attempted to determine the mass of the planet using the radial velocity method. They were unable to do so, but were able to detect BEBOP-1c.

The second planet has an orbital period of 215 days. The astronomers also discovered that it is 65 times more massive than Earth. The cosmic body was named after the Binaries Escorted By Orbiting Planets (BEBOP) project, which aims to collect astronomical data.
