Space internet battle: Amazon Kuiper vs Starlink - now also in Australia
Amazon has announced a partnership between Project Kuiper - its satellite programme for next-generation internet - and Australian ISP NBN Co. The main goal is to bring stable broadband connectivity to hard-to-reach areas of Australia where traditional ISPs either don't work or cost a cosmic amount of money (literally).
Here's What We Know
Project Kuiper utilises Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, which provide faster and more stable connectivity than traditional geostationary systems. This is the same class of satellite that Ilon Musk's Starlink also operates in, so Amazon is officially getting into the global space internet game.
The NBN plans to roll out the technology by the end of 2025 - first to regional and remote areas of Australia. And if all goes according to plan, the project could become a model for other countries.
According to both companies, this is not just a commercial contract, but a strategic move to "eliminate the digital divide," especially in remote communities where the internet is a luxury, not a given.
