Taiwan has ordered 108 M1A2T Abrams tanks worth $2.2bn and plans to receive 38 combat vehicles next year

Four years ago, the US approved the sale of M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Taiwan. Deliveries will begin next year.

Here's What We Know

In 2019, the US authorities approved the sale of 108 M1A2T Abrams tanks. The deal was worth $2.2bn. 38 tanks are expected to be delivered to the country next year. Forty-two and 28 combat vehicles are scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The island nation chose the M1A2T Abrams tanks, which are modified M1A2 SEP V2s, because of their improved mobility. General Dynamics Land Systems was the prime contractor for the deal.

The $2.2bn agreement includes training of personnel and supply of related equipment. The Taiwanese army has already assembled a group of military personnel who will undergo the courses. Taiwan will also receive 14 M88A2 armoured recovery vehicles along with M1A2T Abrams tanks.
