Poland wants to start production of a Polish version of the K2 Black Panther tank in 2026
Poland has started receiving South Korean K2 Black Panther tanks. At the same time, the European country intends to establish production of combat vehicles on its territory in a few years.
Here's What We Know
The contract with the Republic of Korea provides for the organisation of production of main battle tanks in Poland. The combat vehicles will be designated K2PL. The launch of localised production is scheduled for 2026.
Poland has purchased 180 K2 Black Panther tanks. The deal amounted to more than $3 billion. Deliveries have already begun. This batch will allow rearming battalions that currently use T-72 and PT-91 Twardy tanks.
The framework agreement envisages the possibility of purchasing another 820 units of K2 Black Panther. In this case, the Polish Armed Forces will have 1,000 tanks. At least 500 of the 820 combat vehicles will be built on the territory of the European country. In particular, at the Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne factory, where infrastructure preparation has already begun.
The K2PL will receive additional armour and an active protection system. The Polish version of the tank will be armed with a large-calibre machine gun and will be able to use programmable ammunition.
